Black Poplar walk
May 18 @ 13:15 – 14:15
The black poplar is a spectacular, iconic tree, native to East Anglia, featuring in paintings such as Constable’s The Haywain but which has declined significantly in numbers in the last century for a variety of reasons – primarily as its traditional use as a building material (due to its natural fire resistant and shock absorbing qualities) has been superceded by other materials.
The Suffolk Black Poplar Project, led by David Appleton of the Suffolk Tree Warden Network (www.suffolktreewardens.org.uk) is working to reverse that population decline and restore the tree to the Suffolk landscape. David will lead a walk to look at two superb black poplars in Abbey Gardens and the adjoining No Man’s Meadow, and will speak about efforts nationally to save the black poplar.
Meet 1.10pm at the BioBlitz Hub in the Abbey Gardens (near the Lark footbridge and play area)
