Swifts, Barn Owl & House Martin Projects Talk

May 17 @ 10:00 11:00

Eddie Bathgate will talk about three iconic and threatened bird species that are benefitting from concerted attempts to save them here in Suffolk. Hear the latest on Save Our Suffolk Swifts – including news from Bury’s very own swift colony in St John’s church tower; on the new project House Martin Support Suffolk; and on BOSS (Barn Owl Support Suffolk).

Suffolk’s Barn Owl population is largely hosted in man-made boxes that have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years and a number of these boxes are deteriorating, leading to a marked increase in reports of Barn Owl breeding being affected by dilapidated boxes, boxes coming loose in high winds and of entrances being blocked by debris.

Since Barn Owls are largely site faithful and tend stay in their home range for their whole lives, nest site loss has a devastating impact on local populations, which BOSS tries to address.
