The Bury St Edmunds Herbal
01/05/2020 @ 19:00 - 20:30
Raymond Ball is a member of BWMG and used to work at Kew Gardens but halfway through life was called to the protestant ministry. There is a long history of clergy naturalists! In retirement his botanical studies continued, adding wider scientific studies, especially into insects. In recent years he has been lecturing on the science of climate change.
The Bury St Edmunds Herbal is an ancient manuscript and can be found in the Bodleian Library in Oxford not in our own Cathedral sadly! It describes plants used in medieval times to cure many of our common ailments. Many of the descriptions are an intriguing insight into the knowledge of the early people who learnt from these plants. The wonderful illustrations make delving into the book fascinating and many gems can be picked up from the pages of the Herbal which Reverend Ball will take us through.
